Monasterio de leyre

Monastery of Leyre (in Basque Leire), is one of the most important monastic ensembles of Spain for its historical and architectural significance. Between the various buildings that make up the set there are exemplary Romanesque very prominent because they belong to a period very early and their excellent state of conservation.

The monastery is located in the northeast of the Foral community of Navarra, near the border with Aragon. There are news documented about Leyre already in the 9th century. The monastery had a great significance in the history of the Kingdom of Pamplona-Najera and subsequently in the Navarre, as well as the Reconquista. The Pantheon where lie the first monarchs of the Kingdom of Pamplona is located on it.

Leyre was founded as a Benedictine monastery, but later it became to be in hands of Cistercian monks. Today, the monastic complex belongs to the region of Navarre, which has given it its primitive inhabitants, the Benedictine order, for its care and operation. Go to the website
